Professor Corning, Ed.D. | LA Pierce College
Welcome to English with Professor Corning. In the short video attached here, you can learn a little about me.
I will post video announcements in our Canvas shell on a regular basis, and I will always strive to keep them short and to the point. They are required viewing if you wish to be successful in the class!
I'm looking forward to a great semester with you all. Feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns—I will always do my best to help.
Prof. Corning (he/him)
My online classes have no regularly schedule meeting times—we will NOT have any required meetings in Zoom. Work will be completed asynchronously (on your own time) and submitted through Canvas.
I will attempt to have several options for Zoom meetings throughout the term, but as an asynchronous course, these will not be mandatory. The purpose of these will simply be to give everyone a chance to check in and ask questions.
This course is NOT self-paced. You will work through the content on your own, but you need to be mindful of deadlines. There will be asynchronous discussions in both written and video format, and you will interact with me and your classmates in that way. We will make our way through the course TOGETHER.
The course is organized into modules based on course content. Be sure to work your way through the modules in sequential order so that you always have the information you need for the modules that follow.
Use the "Policies and Resources" link to find basic guidelines for your participation in this course, including policies regarding late work, academic integrity, and so forth.
Use the "Courses" menu to find material specific to the English course you are taking with me.
Sign in to Canvas (http://ilearn.laccd.edu) regularly—daily for summer/winter sessions, or at least every other day for fall/spring terms.
Watch out for my announcement videos, which I will post regularly—daily during winter/summer courses and weekly during fall/spring courses. I strive to keep my videos between 5 and 10 minutes in length; in return, I ask that you please watch them all the way through. In the videos, I will explain assignments and highlight important concepts. (Some may have extra credit Easter Eggs.)
Make your way through the course using the Modules tab in Canvas. Some items will not be visible until after you have completed or viewed previous items in the modules, so be sure to start on the first page of each module and make your way through one page at a time.
Pay close attention to assignment due dates and try to turn things in early whenever possible!
Use the desktop/laptop version of Canvas regularly; the smartphone app will be useful for some things, but you might miss out on some other important things if you only use the app or mobile site.
The best way to reach me is by email: corninc@piercecollege.edu
You can also send me messages directly in Canvas. However, please do not send attachments through Canvas.
During the week, I will typically reply to emails within 24-36 hours. Emails sent after 12 PM on Fridays will be answered on Monday.
Please do not send assignments by email or as submission comment attachments in Canvas.
Check out the "Support" link from our home page in Canvas for information on tech support and other Pierce resources.
Post in our Q&A discussion found in the welcome/orientation module in Canvas.
I am frequently available to meet with you via Zoom to answer questions or explain assignments. In my experience, most Zoom appointments with students last between 5 and 10 minutes, but the meetings can be shorter or longer as needed. Please note that I may have other meetings or appointments scheduled after our meeting, so once I have addressed your questions, I might need to excuse myself to attend to those responsibilities.
To set up an appointment, email me at least one day in advance to request a time slot between 1:30 and 3:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. Be sure to request a specific time, such as 1:45 PM or 2:15 PM.
The link for my office hours Zoom room is: http://is.gd/profc (temporarily down--use: https://tinyurl.com/officehourswprofc
I will always use that link for our appointments; if you click on the link and I am not yet in the room, please wait and I should join you shortly. (Be sure to set an appointment first!)
Please note that I am typically not available to meet before the term begins or during finals.
